Man, 64, accused of injuring neighbor's dog with fishing hooks, line - Chicago Tribune

A 64-year-old man is facing animal cruelty charges after causing his neighbor's dog to become entangled in fishing lines and hooks in the Brighton Park neighborhood on the Southwest Side on Tuesday, police said.

The 64-year-old was charged with cruelty to animals, two counts of resisting arrest, assault, and criminal damage to property, all of which are misdemeanors, police said.

The incident happened Tuesday at a building in the 4500 block of South Troy Street where the suspect and the victim live, police said.

The victim, a man, let his dog out but when he heard it howling and crying in pain, the man went outside where he found his pup’s rear legs entangled in clear fishing line and four fish hooks embedded in the dog’s flesh, according to police.

When the victim confronted the 64-year-old, the suspect said: “Yeah, I did it. Next time I’ll set a (expletive) bear trap for that dog,’’ according to a police report. He also stated: “You need to be scared of me (expletive)” to the victim, the report said.

When police officers arrived at the scene, the victim told police his neighbor hung fishing line and hooks around the front yard in a successful attempt to injure his dog, the report said.

When an officer grabbed the suspect’s arm and began placing him in custody, the 64-year-old pulled away and tried to flee into his home, the report said.

Information about the dog’s condition was not immediately available.
