There’s a lot of talk about who’s “top dog” around Capitol Hill. But one competition is putting it to the test.
Fireside21, a Web services company that caters to the Hill, opened voting Monday for their first annual “Top Dog” competition with 75 bipartisan canine entrants from the House, Senate and surrounding agencies.

“It’s a fun summer recess thing to do. I came up with the idea as I’ve been on the Hill for many years and as we go office to office supporting our clients and reaching out to staffers you always see members and their dogs,” Ames said.
The leader of the pack as of Tuesday afternoon is Winston, an English lab from Texas GOP Rep. Mac Thornberry’s office with 3,541 points. Entrants receive 2 points for a social media “share” and 1 point for a “like.”
Winston belongs to Thornberry press assistant Jon Corley, who said during an interview that Winston “is grateful for all the support he has received thus far in the competition.”

Winston is followed close behind by Milton, a Chow from the House Press Gallery, and a Mini Goldendoodle named Lucy from Congressman Brett Guthrie’s office.
Other famous pooches in the running include dogs from the Capitol Police, and the offices of Sen. Dianne Feinstein and Reps. Darrell Issa, Louie Gohmert and Joe Kennedy.
Winners will be announced Sept. 10 with an awards ceremony at Fireside 21’s offices, Ames said. The Top Dogs will receive special bowls and every entrant gets a leash.

The competition, which goes through Sept. 6, is just a fun way to celebrate recess, said Kenny Ames, Fireside 21’s director of outreach.
