$6000 reward offered to find person responsible for dead dog - Syracuse.com

Syracuse, N.Y. -- Animal advocates are offering a $6,000 reward to help authorities generate leads in a case involving a 13-pound dog that was found dead Tuesday in Syracuse.

Syracuse police were called Tuesday to Smith Lane near Syracuse University's Outer Comstock area for a report of a dog crying out in pain.

When police arrived they discovered a young tan and white pit bull type dog dead from starvation between two dumpsters outside an apartment building. The dog was posthumously named Jax.

The dog weighed about 13 pounds. A similar dog should way between 40 and 60 pounds, the Cuse Pit Crew said.

Officer Rebecca Thompson said the dog was dead when police arrived. The animal had virtually no muscle mass, pressure sores on its body, bones showing through its skin and its toenails had become overgrow and curled into its paws.

Thompson said the animal's owner likely had been neglecting it for months before police found it between the dumpsters.

"And it was in no condition to get there on its own," she said. "Someone put it there."

The Cuse Pit Crew and the Animal Alliance of Greater Syracuse have offered a $1,000 reward. The Humane Society of the United States has also offered a $5,000 reward for information leading to the identification, arrest and conviction of the person responsible for the dog.

"This is a very extreme case of animal abuse in our community," said Eric Bernthal, board chair for the Humane Society of the United States, and a Syracuse native. "We hope our reward will bring forward anyone with information about this terrible crime."

Thompson said it it rare for such a large reward to be offered in an animal cruelty case, but that police hope it generates tips.

"This sizable reward fund shows just how seriously animal advocates are about bringing those who abuse animals to justice," said Lindsay Ott Wilcox, of the Cuse Pit Crew.

The Cuse Pit Crew and the Animal Alliance of Greater Syracuse is inviting the public to help post reward posters throughout the neighborhood where the dog was found. Volunteers will meet at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the entrance to Oakwood Cemetery off Colvin Street.

Anyone with information about the dead dog is asked to contact Syracuse police at 315-442-5336.
