FDA stumped over which Chinese-made jerky treats are causing 600 dog deaths ... - Patriot-News

If it were a contaminated food crisis killing humans, this country would be on a full-scale alert. But over the past year, some 600 dogs have died, apparently from the jerky treats their owners fed them as a sign of love. Yet even today, the FDA can’t say for sure which brands are causing the canine calamity.

Instead, the FDA is seeking help from veterinarians treating the sickened dogs to assist in tracking down the treat brands involved.

This much is known about the continuing plague of pet illnesses and death related to the China-made treats: The offending items are jerky treats made of chicken or duck. And they were made in China but distributed under differing brand labels.

Dogs have definitely borne the brunt of the tainted treat crisis. Nearly 600 have died as a result of poisoning and related illnesses tied to the treats, according to media reports. Another 3,600 pets have been reported as sick. And a few cats have been felled or sickened by the treats, too.

Aside from trying to get to the bottom of the crisis, the FDA is warning pet owners to be very careful in selecting treats for their furry friends. But it has yet to name any brands tied to the incident.

Now let’s hear from pet owners: Have you had a dog or cat sickened by a treat? Tell your story in the comments.

Also, if you love a pet, how are you going about selecting treats for your dog or cat to keep them happy and healthy? Please share tips with other panicking pet owners in the comments.
