Canine tragedy inspires Orem woman's quest for dog park - Daily Herald

An Orem dog owner is a finalist in a nationwide contest to win a $500,000 dog park.

Deanna Watson rescued her dog, Day-Z, from the Utah Humane Society shelter.

"She was hit by a car and had to have her eye removed and sewn shut, so having a safe place for her to play is super important to me," Watson told the Daily Herald. "Winning this contest would be my way of giving back to other dog owners and their furry friends, and encouraging them to play together outside."

The Beneful Dream Dog Park Contest invited dog owners across the country "to dream up their ultimate play destination," said a spokeswoman. To enter, Watson, submitted a short essay addressing the question, if you had $500,000 to create a Dream Dog Park, what would you do?

Of more than 1,000 entries, Day-Z and Watson were chosen to be one of 14 finalists.

"We feel luckier than a rabbit's foot to have made it to this round," said Watson.

She has now created a video to explain her vision for a dream dog park.

"Since we live in Utah, and Day-Z and I like to enjoy the beautiful nature around us, our idea is to build a Doggy Day camp," she said. "We'll include a waterfall to splash in, arch hoops for dogs to jump through, fire pit sand boxes to dig in, rock balls to fetch, mountain bridges to cross."

The winner will be chosen in part by the votes of the public along with designer Nate Berkus, television host Jason Cameron, and bestselling author Arden Moore. Anyone who would like to help bring a major new dog park to Utah can vote online until December 5.

"I hope it is a park in Utah County because that is where we live, but Beneful will ultimately determine the dog park that will receive the renovation," she said. The renovation will begin in early 2014 and is expected to be completed in early summer of next year.

If she wins, Watson will also get $10,000 cash and a year's supply of dog food.

"If I win the $10,000, I want to buy a new car with cargo space in the back to make it easier for me to travel with my dog -- and because my car recently went kaput," she said.
