GREENWICH -- A dog died Wednesday after falling into the Mianus River, despite rescue efforts by its owner and first responders.
The dog fell into the river near its owner's waterfront residence on Cary Road, with the owner then going into the water to try to save the dog, according to Greenwich Deputy Fire Chief Thomas Zack.
The incident was reported at 2:35 p.m. By the time first responders arrived, the woman retreated from the water to a neighbor's home, but the dog was still in the water, according to Zack.
"Upon my arrival, the female (owner) was found in the home ... and the dog was found under the ice," Zack said. "That's exactly what I saw."
Zack then sent two firefighters from the Cos Cob station's Truck 1 in cold-water exposure suits into the water to rescue the dog. They retrieved the dog, but it was unresponsive.
The firefighters then started CPR. Resuscitation efforts continued, as firefighters and Greenwich Emergency Medical Service personnel worked "feverishly" to revive the dog in an ambulance on the way to an undisclosed Stamford veterinarian, Zack said.
The dog was pronounced dead at the veterinarian's office, according to Zack. He said he did not know the dog's breed.
The owner, meanwhile, was treated by GEMS for hypothermia and transported to an undisclosed hospital, Zack said.
"We're big advocates of people staying out of the water at this time of year," Zack said. "It's in (their) best interests to call 911 quickly, so the fire department, which has the equipment to initiate this kind of rescue, can respond.
