New dog park opens in Honolulu - KHON2

It’s been years in the making and now finally ready for use.

On Sunday, the city, along with other community members, opened the Ala Wai Dog Park. It’s one of six off-leash dog parks on the island.

“It’s about coming out of our high-rise condos into a dog park like this, and watching our dogs, talking to each other about our puppies, and talking to each other about ourselves. And really creating a community,” said Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell.

Along the way, the project had some setbacks including a large sewer main break along the Ala Wai Canal back in 2006.

“And it set us back quite a long time, thanks to staging equipment here and all the other things to get that sewer line repaired. But we’re here,” said Ron Lockwood, McCully-Moiliili Neighborhood Board Chair.

The dog park was made possible thanks to a joint-effort from the city and the Ala Wai K-9 Playground Association.

In fact, most of the materials for the park were donated. The city says it only had to pay for a few signs and a couple of trash cans.

With such limited space in urban Honolulu, dog owners says they needed a safe and enclosed area for their pets to play.

“It’s a safe place to socialize your dog, let them run free. Especially if you live in town, you don’t have any wide open spaces. This is the best thing for dogs and for their owners, too,” said dog owner Trenna Sykes-Hebert.

The dog park is divided into two sections: one area for small dogs, the other for larger ones.

Volunteers, or park rangers, will also be on hand to patrol the area.

Dog owners say they’d like to see more of these across the island.

“I think that’d be great. Oahu itself, it’s got a lot of green area, a lot of parks. A lot of dogs, too. So I think it’d be in everyone’s best interest to have a place to have dogs play and I think it adds a lot of value to the neighborhoods as well,” said dog owner James Hong.

The dog park is open daily from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m.
