FREMONT -- A terrier mix that was found on the side of the road after it fell from a pickup truck earlier this week and the dog's canine companion found roaming a nearby street have both been returned to their rightful owner, police said.
Police got involved with the two found dogs on Wednesday morning when a man driving in the area of Fremont Boulevard near Gibraltar Drive saw a miniature terrier mix fall from a blue pickup truck and stopped to help retrieve the little dog, said Fremont police spokeswoman Geneva Bosques.
A community services officer who was driving on Fremont Boulevard noticed the man trying to catch the little dog, which was running around on the side of the road just north of American High School near the Marbaya Apartments. The services officers stopped and waited with the dog until animal services arrived. The second dog, also a terrier mix, was found by someone about half a mile away and brought to the Tri-City Animal Shelter in Fremont.
Neither dog was injured, but police wondered if the dogs had been abandoned as they did not have tags or microchips and had not been neutered.
A woman called the shelter later Wednesday saying she believed the dogs were hers but she was delayed by work and didn't come until Thursday to get her dogs. Bosques said shelter workers are certain the dogs belonged to the woman because she described their collars and the dogs responded to their names.
"We always want to make sure someone is telling us the right story," Bosques said. "But we absolutely believe we've put the dogs with their rightful owner."
The woman said she had been walking the two small dogs when she was scared by a large dog and dropped the leashes, allowing the dogs to ran away. Bosques said the woman told shelter workers she searched for the dogs all Wednesday but never called the shelter to see if they were there.
The story of the lost dogs generated significant interest on social media; at least half a dozen people and an animal rescue group were interested in adopting the two dogs before the owner came forward.
The case also gave the Tri-City Animal Shelter some much-needed exposure. The shelter is full and many dogs, cats and kittens need homes.
"There has been so much interest in this story,'' said Bosques. "It's been overwhelming for our shelter staff but it's also motivated them to find other ways to find forever homes for the animals.
"Anyone who thought they might want to have the (two lost) dogs should check out the dogs at the shelter that are up for adoption."
Shelter workers are also being trained on how to use Twitter and Facebook to better generate interest in adoptable animals. The Tri-City Animal Shelter is located at 1950 Stevenson Blvd. and can be reached at 510-790-6630.
