Ohio dog owners should keep an extra eye on their pups due to an unknown canine illness that is spreading across the state. According to NBC4i, the Ohio Department of Agriculture is searching for the cause of the mysterious illness that has already killed four dogs.
The symptoms of this problem include vomiting, bloody diarrhea, weight loss and lethargy. Ohio officials are investigating dogs that show symptoms of this illness. Vets say they are seeing an increase in the number of concerned owners calling about their dogs. Experts encourage anyone who sees the symptoms in their pet to visit a vet, because this illness can easily be mistaken for other less serious health issues.
State officials are still trying to find the cause of the mystery illness, which is affecting canines all across Ohio. One of the dogs with the illness tested positive for canine circovirus, which is the first time the virus has appeared in the state. Usually this virus is found in pigs, not household pets. The Ohio Department of Agriculture is working to see if canine circovirus is a contributor to the illness or the sole cause. Until the cause is found, vets encourage dog owners to bring their pet in for medical care if they see any of the symptoms of the illness in their pet.
