Sarah Silverman is well known for her brash comedic style, but she's bound to win over pet lovers with a touching tribute she wrote in memory of her dog, Duck.
In a post on WhoSay, Silverman offered up an "obituary type thing" which is at times a tear-jerker and at times dry and amusing.
Silverman said she adopted Duck from a shelter about 14 years ago when he was estimated to be about 5 years old. The tiny pup was 19 years old on Tuesday when he passed away.
"He was a happy dog, though serene. And stoic. And he loved love," Silverman wrote. "Over the past few years he became blind, deaf, and arthritic. But with a great vet, good meds, and a first rate seeing-eye person named me, he truly seemed comfortable."
But Silverman said Duck stopped eating recently and it became clear that it was "time to let him go." Her boyfriend flew in and Silverman wrote that the two laid in bed and "massaged (the dog's) tiny body, as we love to do — hearing his little "I'm in heaven" breaths."
A doctor then gave Duck a shot, "and he fell asleep, and then another that was basically an overdose of sleeping meds. I held him and kissed him and whispered to him well (past) his passing," Silverman wrote. "I picked him up and his body was limp — you don’t think about the head — it just falls. I held him so tight. And then finally, when his body lost its heat, and I could sense the doctor thinking about the imminent rush hour traffic, I handed him over."
Silverman ends her post by referring to Duck as her longest relationship, only experience of maternal love, constant companion, and best friend.
The comedian took to Twitter Tuesday and Wednesday to share her story and images of Duck. And she thanked her followers for their words of support.
