3rd annual American Humane Association Hero Dog Awards announced - 10News

BEVERLY HILLS - The top 2013 American Hero Dog will be announced Saturday at the third annual American Humane Association Hero Dog Awards at The Beverly Hilton.

The winner is determined by a combination of more than 1 million votes cast by the public and by a celebrity panel that included entertainers Whoopi Goldberg and Kristin Chenoweth as well as country singing star Miranda Lambert.

The following dogs were selected as the leading Hero Dogs in their category:

Cassidy, a small black dog from Midvale, Utah, who had a front leg amputated after being hit by a car, who visits rehabilitation centers and is the subject of presentations to children about disabilities and acceptance.

Jingles, a Labrador from Amsterdam, N.Y., who works as a guide dog for a multiply disabled woman.

Lola, a hearing dog for a deaf woman who lives in Bellingham, Wash.

K9 Lakota, a retired police dog from Locust Grove, Ga., who was involved in more than 80 apprehensions, 28 drug seizures and six vehicle seizures.

CWD Carlos EDD, a retired explosive detection dog who worked with the U.S. Army's 3rd and 4th Infantry Divisions in Iraq for 2 1/2 years, then was transferred to Afghanistan to work in direct support of U.S. Special Forces on the front lines. He later was transferred to work with the International Security Assistance Force, a NATO-led security mission in Afghanistan.

John D, a search-and-rescue dog from Little Rock, Ark., who has also used his scenting ability in detecting ovarian cancer and other forms of cancer.

Bronx, a service dog for a boy from Brunswick, Ga. who suffers from seizures and has lost half his field of vision.

Elle, a therapy dog from Roanoke Rapids, N.C., who is involved with teaching children dog safety and helping people overcome their fear of dogs.

The ceremony, hosted by actor Joey Lawrence, will be shown Oct. 30 on the Hallmark Channel.
