Dog Rescued After Trapped in Sewer Four Days

After spending four days stuck in a sewer, an abandoned Pit Bull in St. Louis, Mo., was finally rescued thanks to concerned locals who acted when animal-control officers refused to ensure the dog's safety.

Locals say that when one man recently moved away from their neighborhood in the North County section of St. Louis, he deserted his two Pit Bulls. Witnesses saw both dogs enter a sewer hole. "One of them actually got right out, but the other one never came out," said Vivian Dudley, who lives in the area.

Eventually, concerned neighbors called the animal-control department, and an officer came to help the dog. After an unsuccessful rescue attempt, however, the officer gave up.

The animal-control department said the dog could conceivably come and go as it pleased, but the rescue efforts were only scaring it into staying put. Local residents say that just wasn't so. "They said there's nothing we can do, we'll put a trap here," said neighbor Mary Greenwell. "And when we came back up and saw the trap we said, 'No, we're gonna have to do something.'"

Those concerned looked for solutions online, enlisting the help of volunteers and an organization called Stray Rescue. Once on the scene, the rescuers were able to coax the Pit Bull a little closer to them. "We were finally able to get it around him and get him to come out far enough to give him the little sleepy drugs and that's about it," said Donna Lochmann with Stray Rescue. The frightened dog was finally brought back to the surface after four subterranean days.

The Pit Bull is now recuperating at a local animal shelter.
