Dog shot three times recovers - WANE

A pitbull recovers after being shot three times.

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - A pitbull who was shot three times by a Department of Corrections officer in May has almost fully recovered from her injuries.

On May 25, an Allen County Community Corrections Department officer passed a house in the 4400 block of Warsaw Street in Fort Wayne. The officer said a dog started running toward him from the screen door. The officer said he called for the owner to stop it, but when nothing happened, he shot the dog in self-defense.

Antione Billingsley said his dog, Baby, which is a 3-year-old Red Nose Pitbull with no prior complaints against her, was pawing at her screen door after seeing another dog. The screen door was loose, so when she jumped on it, it flew open, and she ran out.

"Next thing I heard was two shots," said Kimberly Wiegand, Baby's owner who was home at the time of the shooting.

Wiegand was so shocked, she said didn't even realize her dog had been hit a third time. She said Baby ran behind her whining and that's when she noticed a trail of blood. Baby was shot in the shoulder, chest, and leg. The bullet that entered her body through her chest is still lodged because the veterinarian said it would be too risky to try to remove it.

"Her shoulder bone was shattered so badly that they were thinking about amputating, but they found a better way to have the surgery," Billinglsey said.

For months, Baby had to wear rods in her arm and even a brace around her head. The rods were just taken out last week. Her owners said the hardest part was trying to keep their dog still since she wasn't allowed to go out for walks or jump around while she was healing. Now, she is getting better. Baby's able to jump for treats and roll in the grass, but four months ago, her owners were doubtful they'd see this behavior again.

"You feel all kinds of stuff seeing an animal or a part of our family go through what she's been through," Wiegand said.

Her owners said they will be keeping her close from now on, but they aren't worried something like this will happen again because they know their dog is not dangerous.

"I've never had something like this happen before," Billingsley said. "I still have people over. The kids still play with her."

If people would like to help Baby on her path to recovery, Aboite Animal Clinic is still taking donations in Baby's name to help pay for the cost of all of her surgeries.
