Lost Dog Runs Half Marathon and Earns Medal - Paw Nation

Run, Boogie, run! A chocolate Labrador Retriever is making headlines for his half-marathon high jinks, according to the Metro U.K. Boogie obviously wasn't enjoying the pace of his life at home in Evansville, Ind., because the pup broke loose from his leash to gain access to a local 13.1-mile race.

Dog Receives Medal for Finishing Half-Marathon

Boogie's owner, Jerry Butts, said his dog escaped from his leash - for the fourth time in the past few weeks - the night before the half-marathon. The Lab resurfaced at the race the next day around the halfway mark. Boogie chose runner Kim Arney as his jogging buddy, finishing the remainder of the race with her in about two hours and 15 minutes.

"Because he did not officially enter the race, we do not have his race times. However, we are confident he set a new course record for an unassisted dog," Evansville police said in a statement.

Boogie's efforts earned him a medal and a trip to Animal Care and Control. Thankfully, Butts posted on Facebook about his missing dog, so he and Boogie were reunited shortly after the dog's cool-down. Butts says that Boogie's running career may be on hold for a while. The dog has spent the past several days getting neutered and microchipped, and taking naps.
