Student injured in dog attack at Carver High - Atlanta Journal Constitution

Carver High School was temporarily placed on lockdown Monday afternoon because of a dog attack on a student, authorities said.

The incident was reported just after 1 p.m., Atlanta police said. The lockdown was lifted around 2:30 p.m., and school dismissal was not disrupted, school officials said.

A pair of dogs attacked a student on the school baseball field, Fulton County Animal Services officials said.

Police and school officials said the dogs appeared to be pit bulls, but Animal Services executive director Lara Hudson said they are Rottweilers.

One male student was bitten in the face and taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, Atlanta Public Schools spokeswoman Kimberly Willis Green told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The student was having reconstructive surgery Monday, Channel 2 Action News reported.

Arthur Steverson told Channel 2 that his 16-year-old son, Azarius Lowe, was in so much pain that he had to be sedated. He said Azarius will need at least two surgeries to repair the damage caused by the dogs.

It’s unclear who, if anyone, owns the dogs.

Parent April Brown, who was on campus to pick up her son, said she couldn’t imagine anyone bringing such large dogs to school.

“That’s dangerous,” Brown said. “Not everyone rides a car from school. There are a lot of people who walk.”

Students thought there someone was attacking the campus.

“They didn’t even tell us what happened,” student Darius Floyd said. “They said it was a ‘hard lockdown’ and told us to stay in our classrooms away from the door.”

Animal Control officers are setting traps in an effort to catch the dogs, Hudson said.

“We are also patrolling the area and are asking citizens to be cautious and under no circumstances approach these animals if they encounter them,” she said.
