It begins with lethargy and lack of appetite. It picks up steam with severe vomiting and diarrhea. And it can end in organ failure, even death. Such are the symptoms of the deadly, new circovirus that has been sickening dogs around the country. Vets say the bad bug made the leap from pigs and birds. Now it is turning up among canines in Ohio, Michigan and California.
Quick treatment at the onset of symptoms is the best course to head off the new disease’s deadlier consequences, experts advise. Also, the disease is said to be highly contagious among dogs, making social situations such as kennels and dog parks a risk for pets.
