SANTA FE (KRQE) - A Santa Fe woman was quick to get some answers about her two missing dogs.
Her sister spotted a homeless woman walking with one of the dogs earlier this week. The owner and pet are back together now, but the story doesn't end there.
The homeless woman was arrested in this strange case. The dogs' owner believes the woman took her pets right out of her yard.
“I’m just happy to have her back,” Sara Chapman said about her dog, Olive.
She said when she got to her Santa Fe home Saturday night, her dogs of two years, Olive and Roshi, were not in her yard where she left them. She said they couldn't have gotten out on their own.
“It is a big wooden gate and it has a latch from the outside and from the inside, and you have to unlatch them both, so they must have unlatched it from the inside and then took them out,” Chapman said.
Olive is a French bulldog valued at $2,800.
Three days later, Chapman said her sister spotted a homeless woman, Erin Corvin, walking with Olive on a Santa Fe street. Chapman rushed to find her.
“I confronted her. I said, ‘That is my dog,’” Chapman said. “They had already changed her name to Lucy. And, of course, it ended up in an argument and the police had to be called.”
Celina Westervelt, spokesperson for Santa Fe Police Department, said, “When we got to the scene, the dog had a belt around its neck that the woman was using for a leash and it was wearing a T-shirt.”
Police said Corvin insisted the dog was hers, but Chapman's pictures of Olive ultimately proved who the real owner was. Police arrested Corvin on Ttuesday for receiving stolen property.
“We weren't able to charge the suspect with stealing the dog because nobody actually witnessed and we couldn’t prove it,” Westervelt said.
Four hours after getting Olive back, Chapman said she got bad news about Roshi.
“He got hit by a car the night, the first night,” Chapman said. “They had him tied up with a scarf, and he got loose and ran into traffic."
Chapman said she plans to eventually get another rescue dog as a companion for Olive.
Police said they have previously arrested the suspect, Erin Corvin, for battery and drinking in public.
Corvin bonded out of jail Wednesday.
