A 2-year-old girl died after she was attacked by a dog Saturday afternoon at her grandfather's home in the South Chicago neighborhood and her death was ruled a homicide, authorities said.
Jah'niyah White was pronounced dead at 3:40 p.m. at Jackson Park Hospital after becoming ill in the 3300 block of East 91st Street, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.
Earlier, officials had incorrectly identified the girl as being 3 years old. Jah'niyah of the 1700 block of East 67th Street, was at her grandfather's home when the attack occurred, officials said.
An autopsy today determined that she died from multiple injuries she sustained in a dog attack and said a contributing factor was neglect and her death was ruled a homicide, officials said.
The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services is investigating the grandfather for allegations of abuse pertaining to the child's death, according to DCFS spokeswoman Karen Hawkins. The agency has not had prior contact with the family.
Chicago Police detectives were conducting a death investigation after they were called to the 91st Street address about 2:45 p.m. Saturday to assist Fire Department personnel there, said Chicago Police News Affairs Officer Daniel O'Brien.
Police evidence officers were seen entering and leaving the home where the girl was found.
Chicago Police News Affairs Officer Jose Estrada said Sunday Area South police were conducting a non-criminal death investigation into the girl's death.
