SOUTH HAVEN, Mich. (WOOD) - Emergency crews rescued a dog who had fallen through the ice covering a South Haven-area pond Sunday.
A hunter spotted the dog in a pond off 8th Avenue in Geneva Township around 11:30 a.m. and called 911, according to South Haven Area Emergency Services.
When first responders arrived on the scene, they saw the large dog struggling in the water about 150 feet from shore. The dog was exhausted, they said, and "crying out to rescuers."
First responders used ice water rescue suits, crawled out onto the pond, broke through some ice, and got the dog.
It took them about 11 minutes to retrieve the dog after their arrival.
The dog was cold and tired, but otherwise OK. Rescuers wrapped him in a thermal blanket to warm him up.
The dog was turned over to Van Buren Animal Control to be returned to his owner.
Emergency responders remind residents to stay off the ice and keep pets clear. The ice is still too thin to support their weight and expected warmer temperatures this week will weaken it further.
