SOUTH HAVEN, MI -- Rescue workers in Van Buren County crawled out onto ice to rescue a dog trapped in an icy pond Sunday.
South Haven Emergency Services was called to a report of a dog through ice on 8th Avenue in Geneva Township, near South Haven, at 11:30 a.m. Sunday. When emergency workers arrived, they found a large dog struggling in the water and crying about 150 feet from shore, according to a news release.
Rescue personnel donned ice water rescue suits, crawled onto the ice and broke through the ice to reach the dog. When they brought the dog back to shore, they wrapped him in a thermal blanket.
The dog was turned over to Van Buren County Animal Control, which returned him to his owner. South Haven Area Emergency Services reminds residents to keep off the ice and keep pets away from ice, as it is still too weak to support that much weight.
