Washington’s Ellen Charles had two special reasons to be grateful this Thanksgiving: Jewel and Honor, her two show dogs.
The two champions continued their winning streak at the National Dog Show this month: Both were among the top seven finalists vying for Best in Show. Jewel, an American Foxhound, walked away with the top title and big ribbon.
“I’ve never had dogs that do the kind of winning they do, which is really new and amazing to me,” said Charles, the granddaughter of Marjorie Merriweather Post and co-owner of the dogs.

While not as quite as prestigious as the Westminster Kennel Club’s show, the National Dog Show is arguably more popular: the competition is broadcast annually on NBC after the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade and gets millions of dog-loving viewers. As at Westminster earlier this year, Honor, a bichon frise, won the Non-Sporting group and Jewel won the Hound group – but an affenpinscher won Best in Show. This time, Jewel strutted away with the top prize.
With multiple wins and top-ranking, Jewel and Honor are on track to win top honors for their groups and will go out at the top of their game: Both dogs are retiring at the end of the year. Next chapter of show dog life: Producing championship puppies.
