SAN JOSE -- About 15 people who were packed into a single-family home in East San Jose were displaced Monday night when their home burned down, killing a small dog.
None of the residents were injured in the two-alarm blaze, which at one point had firefighters fearing an explosion because of free-flowing gas inside the house on the 2600 block of Othello Avenue, near Tully and King roads.
San Jose firefighters responded about 6:15 p.m., and about 10 people who were home at the time scampered out unscathed. One of two dogs at the house also escaped, but a second dog died from inhaling smoke, Capt. Reggie Williams said.
"The fire was so intense it destroyed the home's gas meter," Williams said.
But crews were able to prevent the bulk of the fire from spreading to nearby homes. The blaze was controlled within 45 minutes, Williams said.
The house wasn't particularly big but had been modified and added onto several times, Williams said, noting that it has seven bedrooms listed on the real estate website Zillow.com.
Fire crews, including arson investigators, were looking into the cause of the blaze, which was undetermined Monday night. They also did not know why so many people were living in the house, Williams said.
Most of the occupants were men, he said.
