SEE IT: Texas man uses sandwich to rescue injured dog from freeway

An injured dog trapped on a buzzing freeway in Houston last week was rescued by none other than a good Samaritan and a sandwich in a heartwarming act that was caught on camera.

In the heroic deed captured during Friday morning's rush hour, Rickey Young is seen halting his truck on the Eastex Freeway to help the pooch after hearing a radio report of its danger.

"It said 'caution for a dog on the HOV lane,'" Young recalled the report to KHOU after his breathless rescue shortly before 8:30 a.m.

There, just as the report had claimed, he saw the yellow Labrador dangerously lying in the middle of the lane.

"Obviously we were all scared," he said. Once he saw the terrified look on the injured dog's face, he put it all behind him and climbed over the median to reach her.

The yellow Labrador was eventually lured in by Young's lunch and taken to the SPCA where she was found suffering broken bones and internal bleeding.

Video shows the skittish dog immediately getting up to hobble away from him, but that's when Young had an idea.

He went back to his truck and grabbed a sandwich from inside as bait.

Young, pictured, described himself as a dog owner who'd simply hate to see his own dog on the highway like that.

It worked.

Young managed to scoop the dog up and carry it back to his vehicle and transport it to Houston's SPCA.

There, veterinarians discovered her having suffered broken bones and internal bleeding, but no chip that would positively link her to an owner. That same day she underwent surgery.

"I'm just kind of a softy on that stuff," Young told KHOU. "I have a dog and I'd hate to see him on the highway like that."
