Ryan Eddy Watenpaugh, 34, of Palo Cedra, California, has been charged with domestic violence, false imprisonment, stalking and animal cruelty, Redding, California, police said in a press release.
He denies killing or cooking the victim's dog, police say.
The victim, whose name was not released, told police she and Watenpaugh argued on Aug. 4. She claimed he physically assaulted her so she fled out the back door of her Redding-area apartment and when she returned Watenpaugh and her Pomeranian, Bear, were gone.
During the first week of September, the couple briefly reconciled and Watenpaugh cooked her a meal that included meat, she told police.
On Sept. 7, "the victim received a text message from Watenpaugh asking her how the dog tasted, and referenced the meal he had cooked for her," the press release says.
Two days later, Watenpaugh placed a small bag containing two dog paws outside her front door, which she identified as belonging to Bear, she told police.
Police arrested Watenpaugh on Thursday.
"He admitted to sending the messages, and placing the dog's paws at the victim's residence, but denied killing or cooking the victim's dog," the press release says.
Watenpaugh is being held on $250,000 bail.
