A woman was struck by a hit-and-run driver Friday night in Brooklyn after she ran to the aid of her beloved dog — who was fatally struck by another car just moments earlier, police said.
Kristin Rendina, 31, known as Kristy, was walking her dachshund near Avenue Z and West 2nd Street close to her Gravesend home at 11:20 p.m. when her spirited pooch darted into the street and was run over by a car, cops said.
When the dog’s horrified owner futilely ran to save the mortally wounded dog, a black Jeep Wrangler slammed into her and then sped off down Avenue Z, according to authorities.
First responders rushed the woman to Lutheran Medical Center, where she’s in the intensive care unit and listed in a stable condition.
Besides the dachshund, Rendina also owns a pit bull. “The dogs were very healthy, very taken care of,” said Santos Ortiz, 61, her building superintendent and neighbor, who was woken by police at 5am Saturday as they sought to contact Rendina’s family.
Police are looking for the driver of the Jeep. A description of the vehicle that doomed the dachshund was not immediately available.
