Canine2 Iron Dog Competition returns - Chicago Tribune

The annual Canine2 Iron Dog Competition will be back again this year, a month earlier than in the past. The event, open to all dogs and their owners, is scheduled for Sept. 15 at 147th Street and Oak Park Avenue in Oak Forest.

Registration for the 13th annual competition may be completed through the group's website, http://www.canine2.com, before the event or Sept. 14 in the main lobby of the Hampton Inn, 13330 S. Cicero Ave., Crestwood.

Participants are expected to attend the orientation at 6 p.m. Sept. 14, also at the Hampton Inn. The competition is scheduled to kick off at 10 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 15.

The competition gives the public a chance to run their dogs through a course designed for training police dogs. It's about 1.5 miles long and extends through forest preserves in Orland Park, Tinley Park, Crestwood and Oak Forest. Each K-9 team will hike through lightly marked trails, facing obstacles such as hills, downed trees and a creek before coming to an open field where there will be hurdles, stairs, toy pits, tunnels and fences to crawl under before the finish line.

Spectators are welcome. Last year's competition drew people from Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana and Michigan.

"It's a great chance for owners and their pets to change their daily routines and experience something special," said event coordinator Willie "Sarge" McGlaughlin, who has been training police dogs and pet dogs professionally for almost 40 years. "Our goal is to make this a fun and exciting experience for the participants."

The event raises funds for orphaned, destitute and abandoned children living at the Friends of Sheltered Children in Kenya.

Special room rates are available at the Holiday Inn, 708-597-3330. Mention the Canine2 Iron Dog package. Further information can be found on the group's website or by contacting McGlaughlin at 708-254-5412.
