A crafty cat and dog teamed up to make the purr-fect getaway from a locked room.

Perplexed owner Matt Hirst was struggling to find out how the dynamic duo kept escaping from his kitchen whenever he went to work.

Every day, he would shut Dexter the cat and Gizmo the dog inside so that they wouldn't roam the the house, but he'd return to find them playing elsewhere inside his home.

Owner Matt Hirst said he first suspected he had mistakenly left the door open but then wondered if someone had been breaking in to free the pets.



Stumped, he set up a camera to track their movements and learned the pair was working together to plot its flight to freedom.

The video, which has since gone viral and racked up more than 280,000 hits on YouTube, starts with the puzzled pets looking at the closed door.

Dexter then climbs up his scratch pole before using his paw to twist open the knob, letting Gizmo sneak out.

After considering what he's done for several seconds, he then joins his canine pal.

"The first time, I assumed I just must have left the door open. The second time, I checked the whole house thinking that someone was breaking in," said Hirst.

"The third time, I figured it must be the cat, and decided to catch him out, so set the camera up and left it going all day."
