The hit London play “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time” will open on Broadway this fall at the Barrymore Theater in a new production, executives at the National Theater of Great Britain said on Wednesday. Based on Mark Haddon’s best-selling novel, the drama follows Christopher — a 15-year-old mathematics savant with an often crippling antisocial disorder — as he pieces together clues to solve a neighborhood mystery and comes to a greater understanding of his own family. Last year, “Curious Incident” received seven Olivier Awards (London’s equivalent of the Tony Awards), the most ever earned by a play, winning for best new play (adapted by Simon Stephens), best director (Marianne Elliott) and best actor (Luke Treadaway as Christopher) among other categories.
Ms. Elliott will direct the Broadway production; Mr. Treadaway is not expected to reprise his performance, as the New York production will star American actors. The National Theater, which mounted the play in London, will produce the Broadway version.
The National also said on Wednesday that the London production, which closed down last month after part of the ceiling collapsed at its home, the Apollo Theater, will resume performances on June 24 at London’s Gielgud Theater. Nick Starr, executive director of the National, said that repairs to the Apollo made it necessary to move to another theater with more seats to meet the show’s financial goals.
“It will be a real wrench to leave that beautiful theater,” he said of the Apollo, “but sadly the closure of the gallery to enable its restoration means that the show no longer works economically there.” Mr. Starr added that “Curious Incident” could not move into the Gielgud earlier than June because the theater already has a booking, “Strangers on a Train,” and then a spring revival of “Blithe Spirit,” starring Angela Lansbury.
