JASPER, Ind. – A dog found frozen to the ground in the backyard of a home on Monday night is expected to make a full recovery.
According to KTLA, a Sheltie mix named Peanut, who is estimated to be about two years old, and one other dog, were found by deputies in the back yard of a home in Jasper, Ind. around 11 p.m. on Monday. Authorities said they were tipped off by an anonymous call regarding two dogs being left outside in the extreme cold.
Peanut was found inside of a barrel-style dog house, which officers said was not adequate shelter for the temperatures being experienced at the time. Authorities said his stomach, feet, and tail were all frozen to feces which were frozen to the ground. Rescuers had to pour warm water on the dog to free him from the ground.
Another dog was found outside with its leash wrapped around a pole, keeping the animal from being able to take shelter or have access to any water. Rescuers brought that dog inside. Deputies said both dogs’ water bowls were also frozen solid.
According to a report by WFIE, charges have been filed against the owners of the Sheltie mix. The husband and wife, who are both in their fifties, were charged with Animal Neglect, which is considered a class A Misdemeanor where the incident took place.
Both dogs were taken to the Dubois County Humane Society. As of Wednesday Peanut was expected to make a full recovery. Channel 14 reported that several people are interested in adopting him.
