The dog, which is about 5 months old, is named Mya and in good health, according to Paul Beaumont, an assistant dog warden for the town of Sweden.

Beaumont said he’d received numerous calls from people volunteering to take in the pup. It’s unclear if Mya will be returned to her owner, who wasn’t at home during the party.

“I can't explain their actions. I wasn't here, but , I just know all these kids. We've been living here for a year now. It's not like we're horrible people. It's not like they meant to harm the dog or anything like that. We all love Mya, she's a great dog,” Luke Biondi, one of Yates’ housemates, told TWC News in Rochester.

In addition to the misdemeanor charge, the students could face discipline from their university.

“Student privacy laws prevent us from providing any specific information related to student disciplinary matters,” said SUNY Brockport spokesman John Follaco.

A call to Brockport police was not immediately returned.
