5-year-old boy killed in dog attack in Riverside - al.com (blog)

RIVERSIDE, Alabama - A 5-year-old boy is dead after a dog attacked him in Riverside Saturday afternoon.

Riverside Mayor Rusty Jessup told AL.com the boy was in the yard with his 9-year-old brother when the dog attacked the younger brother. "He was attacked by what appears to be an 80 to 100-pound pitbull," he said.

Jessup said after the older brother failed to get the dog off of his brother he ran inside for his father. "The father came out and shot at the dog, and the dog ran to his owner's house," he said. "A neighbor called 911 but when they got to the child they thought he was too bad to wait on rescue workers to get to the scene so they drove him to the emergency room."

Jessup confirmed the child was pronounced dead.

"We haven't had any complaints on the dog before," Jessup said about the dog, which belonged to a neighbor. "In fact we haven't had any dog complaints in that neighborhood."

More information will be published as it comes available.
