A Lancaster man has been arrested by sheriff's deputies on Saturday after a citizen recorded him on video violently throwing his dog around.

Lindsey Cooks was waiting a bus station with his son when he saw 54-year old Robert Martin throwing his dog through the air by its leash. Cooks began recording Martin on his cell phone and called him out on his behavior, and as Martin walked away he slammed the dog down in the middle of the street. The dog then runs away down the street away from Martin, as can be seen in the video from KTLA.

Cooks told KTLA that when he called Martin out on his behavior, he told the African-American Cooks, "Shut up n—."

According to Cooks, the dog was not listening to Martin, which made the man upset.

"You look at the video... there's something really wrong with the guy. He don't need animals or kids around him," said Cooks.

Cooks called authorities to report the animal abuse and deputies arrested the man shortly thereafter. He felt like it was the right thing to do, saying "I'm a human being, you know? I couldn’t see not even a human being being treated like that, especially a dog that can’t defend itself." He also recorded a video deputies arresting Martin with his cell phone camera.

Martin's dog was picked up and checked by Animal Control, who said it was not seriously injured. It is currently being held at a Los Angeles County Animal Care facility in Lancaster.
